What is Kava..?

  • Kava beverages, made from dried roots of the shrub “Piper Methysticum”, have been used ceremonially and socially in the South Pacific for hundreds of years and in Europe since the 1700s.  Kava is consumed to treat anxiety, ADHD, depression, insomnia, and more.  It can be consumed in multiple forms: from being taken as an encapsulated supplement to being ground into a powder and made into a “ethnobotanical tea,” which is what we serve here.  The experience is often compared to “being drunk without the loss of mental clarity.”  Because of its anti-anxiety/depression properties, it increases sociability, elates mood, eases tension, has a slight body-numbing/pain-relieving effect, and in some users can act as a very mild aphrodisiac.  Kava is also noted for its uses as a whole body cleaner, anti-microbial, and hepatic (liver) cleanser.  It is also currently being studied for its anti-cancer properties.

Why Choose Dharma’s Kava..?

  • Our 100% genuine and organic kava is the finest & strongest, boasting the highest kava-to-water mixture around.  We ensure that our kava is acquired from the lateral roots of the Piper Methysticum root.  A mature plant is about 20% lateral roots.  Kava lateral roots have the highest content of kavalactones in the kava plant, making them worthy of being considered "Waka" grade kava.  Waka kava is revered as the most potent part of the root and in Hawaii it is required by law that the root be allowed to grow for 5 years before uprooting it, cutting the root, and replanting.
    • On top of that, our master brewer and owner Drew has perfected a mixed kava beverage, which we have deemed our “Dharma Special.”  Ground kava root itself isn’t water soluble, meaning it is simply suspended in the water (which leaves the gritty texture).  When traditionally made kava-water has almond milk, thick cream, and our secret blend of ingredients added to it, our body’s are able to absorb more of the kavalactones and our tongues aren’t overwhelmed by the generally muddy taste of straight kava-water!

Is Kava Drinking Safe/Legal?

  • Kava is 100% legal within the United States.
    • In the past decade or so, as a result of greedy crony companies with very poor farming, cultivation, and manufacturing processes, kava was falsely given a bad name and illegalized in a few countries because some users of the products from these evil companies experienced liver damage.  These products have since been pulled from shelves internationally and the companies responsible for the endangerment are no longer in production.
      • Even knowing this, to protect and assure our customers of the safety of our products, we’ve done significant research into our kava supplier to confirm the cultivation and manufacturing processes are 100% traditional, organic, and genuinely imported from Fiji.  Our kava is sold internationally and revered for its consistently superior quality.  Also, Fiji has regulatory laws to protect their unique, strong, & traditional kava’s name and brewers/users.
    • To be completely transparent and straight-forward:Abusive,heavy,long-term kava usedoes not causeany reduction of ability in saccade (reactivity/motor-muscle) and cognitive tests, butis associated withslightly elevated liver enzymes.
      • This means that when kava is ingested daily, for along period of time, at anabusively heavy quantitywill not impair brain function, butwill “tax” the liver (make it work harder).  Overworking the liver can cause damage over time.  The duration and amount necessary to reach significant liver taxation
        • While physical addictionisn’t possible with kava drinking, some individuals canconvince themselves they need it, leading to an easily reversiblefictional dependency. If at any time you feel or we notice you are showing signs of fictional dependency,we will offer to help you painlessly overcome this non-serious condition.

Let’s Talk Brain Chemistry..

  • Kava's active principal ingredients are thekavalactones, of whichat least 15 have been identified and are all considered psychoactive.  Only six of them produce noticeable effects, and their concentrations in kava plants vary.  Different ratios can produce different effects.
  • Research has suggested that kavalactones potentiate GABA-A activity, but do not alter levels of dopamine and serotonin in the central nervous system.  Ligands which contribute to receptor activation typically have anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), anti-convulsant, amnesic, sedative, hypnotic, euphoric, and muscle relaxant properties.
  • Desmethoxyyangonin, one of the six major kavalactones, is a reversible MAO-B inhibitor and is able to increase dopamine levels in the nucleus accumbens. This finding might correspond to the slightly euphoric action of kava.
  • Kavain, which is suggested to be significant in our kava, in both enantiomeric forms, inhibits the reuptake of norepinephrine at the transporter (NAT), but not of serotonin (SERT).An elevated extracellular norepinephrine level in the brain may account for the reported enhancement of attention and focus.
  • Yangonin, another major kavalactone, has been demonstrated to act as a CB1 agonist. This mechanism is also responsible for the effects of THC and likely contributes to the psychoactive effects of kava.
  • Recent usage of kava has been documented in forensic investigations by quantization of kavain in blood specimens.  The principal urinary metabolite, conjugated 4'-OH-kavain, is generally detectable for up to 48 hours.  Essentially, kavain remains in the blood at detectable levels for up to 2 days.  Although, for most users who typically consume a relatively low amount of kavalactones when compared to the amount used in the investigation, it is more than likely a day. While the total effect of kava only lasts 3-6 hours max depending on many factors, really insignificant amounts of the kavalactone kavain are detectable in a blood test for up to 2 days.

**WARNING: DO NOT CONSUME KAVA IF YOU HAVE CONSUMED ALCOHOL IN THE LAST 12-24 HOURS.Because kava is a liver cleanser, it will purge the alcohol from your system--which can cause abdominal discomfort, vomiting, excessive sweating, spasms, and it taxes your liver.

**WARNING: Kava has not been tested for pregnancy risk. If you are pregnant, consumption of kava is generally not recommended.

**NOTE: The kava brewed here is not meant to diagnose, treat, or cure any sickness/disease--mental or physical.
