Mitragyna Speciosa (“Kratom Leaf”) Information Sheet

What is Kratom..?

  • Mitragyna speciosa (Kratom; Thai: กระท่อม) is a tropical deciduous and evergreen tree in the coffee family (Rubiaceae) native to Southeast Asia in the Indochina and Malesia floristic regions.  The leaves of kratom have been used as an herbal supplement from time immemorial by the peoples of Southeast Asia.  It is used in folk medicine as a stimulant (most noticeably in our Wide-Eye White tea), sedative, pain reliever (most noticeably in our Golden Red Remedy tea), and has recently become a common treatment for those withdrawing from opiate addiction (nationally recognized and used in New Zealand instead of other medicines).
  • By affecting the Mu and Delta opioid receptors, as well as being a COX-2 selective inhibitor (similar to a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory like Advil), Kratom provides a calm, relaxing, and pain-numbing euphoria.  However, it contains over 25 different alkaloids that have different effects, including stimulant, sedative and euphoric properties.
  • Kratom affects the body and mind similarly to opiates, but, isn’t.  It is NOT a narcotic nor a “drug.”  We kindly ask that they not be compared, please.
    • The Stimulant Effects: At the stimulant level the mind is more alert, physical energy (and in some cases libido) increases, ability to do difficult/monotonous physical work may be improved, one is more talkative, friendly, and sociable.  Those sensitive to stimulants like caffeine should be careful with stimulating strains, as they may experience jitters or hyper-activity.
      • The Sedative-Analgesic Effects: At this level the user will be less sensitive to physical/emotional pain/stress and feel/seem more calm.  The sedative-analgesic effect is strongest in our Golden Red Remedy brew.
      • The Eurphoric-Lightening Effects: At this level the user will have a general feeling of comfortable pleasure and may enter a pleasant dreamy reverie.  The body/mind are relaxed and calm.  The increase in dopamine is slightly stimulating and produces the most noticeable effects of euphoria (happiness without reason), giddiness, and emotional stabilizing.
        • The time it takes for the effects to onset depends on each individual’s digestive system, contents of the stomach, and other factors.
        • The amount necessary to feel the effects vary from person-to-person depending on brain chemistry, height/weight, and many other factors.Do not expect strong/noticeable effects from one tea, as it generally requires more.  For pain relief, stress, or narcotic withdrawal treatment, however, medicinal doses (of red strain teas) are 1-3 teas.

Additional Facts

Is Kratom Legal/Safe..?

  • Kratom, unlike kava, has not been yet approved by the FDA.  Although, the FDA approves over 1,000 dangerous chemicals that are allowed to be used in things like food, skin products, and cigarettes...  It is simply too insignificantly used at this point for the FDA to take notice and put forth resources for research, although that is slowly changing.
  • The kratom leaf that we serve is designated as an aromatherapy tea that is not FDA approved for human consumption.
    • That being said, kratom is NOT illegal or dangerous to ingest recreationally.  A business simply cannot sell a product for consumption if it is not yet approved by the FDA.
      • The differences between kratom and actual opiates is the fact that it is non-binding and effects your opioid receptors differently, meaning it is non-addictive and will not cause withdrawal symptoms or cravings.
      • Kratom has no significant side-effects, although some heavier users will experience minor constipation, loss of appetite, and minor itchiness.
      • In larger quantities it can cause nausea in some users, especially if it is their first experience.  It is not suggested that first-time users ingest copious amounts of kratom too quickly as to give the stomach time to digest.

What Do I Need To Know?

  • Tolerance develops, requiring more material to achieve the same effects.  It is recommended that users do not use Kratom more than twice or three occasions a week, to minimize the development of tolerance.
    • Cross-tolerance has also been noted.  This means that a user can consume Kratom and build a tolerance for both Kratom and certain opioid-like medications.  This could pose a problem for those prescribed pain medication to someone after regular Kratom use.

Kratom and Brain Chemistry

  • Kratom contains a number of active components, called alkaloids, of whichmitragynine is believed to be responsible for most of its effects.  Mitragynine is an opioid agonist, meaning that it has an affinity for the opioid receptors in your brain.  These receptors influence one’s mood and anxiety.  Mitragynine effects these receptors and improves your mood and gives a euphoric-like feeling.  The big difference between kratom and opiates is that mitragynine prefers Delta-opioid receptors, while opiates bind to the Mu-opioid receptors and it is non-binding.  At moderate strength, mitragynine increasingly stimulates Mu-opioid receptors, which is believed to be the reason that kratom is not addictive.
  • Over 25 alkaloids have been isolated from kratom.  The most abundant alkaloids consist of three indoles and two oxindoles.
    • The three indoles are mitragynine, paynanthine, and speciogynine - the first two of which appear to be unique to this species.
      • The two oxindoles are mitraphylline and speciofoline.
        • Other alkaloids present include other indoles, and oxindoles such as ajmalicine, corynanthedine, mitraversine, rhychophylline, and stipulatine.
